I can barely recall My very first day of Kindergarten at Pleasant valley school less than
a block away from this very spot in the "Flats", in Fort Dodge, Iowa. My family lived in
the upper apartment in the flat topped building just behind the landlord's house and in the
lower right of the picture and under the "A unit" of the Chicago Great Western freight on
the trestle.  My father thought the place was a "fire trap" and after a wind storm took away
the steps one night, the landlord had to get a ladder so My parents could get to work.
We soon moved from the "Flats"...more than 60 years ago.

Here is another picture from the "Flats". I really think I may have seen this as a small child, however memory is
a funny thing and I may just have seen the photo of these mothballed steam engines as a child. They do sit only
a block from where we lived for a time. Today, I now kind of feel like these old engines...just on a bad day.
